Equally, making the right changes to your lifestyle and exercise can lead to faster and more sustained healing. There are many common mistakes/issues that people can simply address in order to help their condition recover and have better health. These are typically:

 

1. Improve your posture

Poor posture is an ever increasing and common problem in all modern society. Dr Alex will look to identify the root causes internal and external to your posture issues, create strategies and rehab advice and postural exercises to improve your posture.

 

2. Exercise regularly

It is important to get 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every day. This will improve your overall health as the health of your spine! It might for every personal be different, from a swim, a vigorous walk to a class at the gym. Targeted exercise that woks for your individual case is important to help you return to better function and also so as to not aggravate your condition.

3. Support your back when you carry things

Often the most associated with back pain, how we pick up and move heavy items without supporting our backs can lead to serious back injuries. Care should always be taken when lifting heavy objects and safe lifting techniques should be used. Depending on your occupation and recreation you may benefit from some correct bending/lifting training.

4. Sleep in comfort

Chiropractors generally recommend sleeping on your back or your side (with a correct pillow height), not on your stomach. You need a mattress and pillow that allow your spine to rest in a supported and comfortable way. Your pillow should allow proper alignment of your neck.

5. Healthy lifestyle

You can lead a healthy lifestyle by avoiding alcohol and cigarettes and maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise. This will help keep your weight down and give you the energy to keep moving. Being overweight or obese are risk factors for lower back pain.

6. Core strength

Strengthen your core muscles which include your lower back and abdominal muscles. By keeping these muscles strong, you will be giving your spine support, and take pressure off your lower back. Developing strong core muscles is also important for maintaining good posture and can help reduce back pain.
